Happy Tails!
Hello again, friends!
This week, we have something exciting to share -- we're MOVING! Thanks to your generous donations, our Board of Directors has been able to purchase a larger property (2,000 acres to be exact) in southern Georgia.
As we prepare to move and revamp our sanctuary, our blog may be quiet for some time as we design a new website to fit our needs. We hope you'll understand.
We know how much the stories of hope we share each week mean to each of you, so we thought for our last blog post we would showcase a few of our favorites.
1. Rocky Balboa
Just three years ago, Rocky found himself inside a dumpster after his owners abandoned him. When our rescue team heard his story, we just knew he needed a safe, warm place of his own forever, so we sent Suzy Lee all the way to California to pick him up.
Many people are afraid of snakes, so we use Rocky's rockin' personality to teach people about the behaviors of large reptiles, as well as how to care for them in emergency situations.
With his antics and selfie-loving personality, you would never know Rocky came from such a dire situation. From clinging to life to living it fully, Rocky has found his forever home at Second Chance.
2. Suzy Mae
Many of our Facebook followers might be familiar with the little kitten who wouldn't give up - Suzy Mae. For those that aren't, she has quite the extraordinary story.
Two years ago, one of our staff members found her nearly dead in a ditch. Apparently, her previous owner had dumped her there in the middle of a thunderstorm.
Not only was she cold, but Suzy Mae was also extremely malnourished and sick. We weren't quite sure she would pull through.
Happily, Suzy Mae just wouldn't give up. She ate furiously and soon was bouncing all around the med room like a kangaroo! Today, she's a happy, healthy cat with a sassy personality of her very own, and we couldn't be more thankful.
3. Rafiki
In last week's post, we shared a picture of Julia Crown with our one resident baboon, Rafiki. Lots of our followers had questions about how in the world our sanctuary ended up with a a baboon. The answer is pretty simple: he needed help.
Just four months ago, Rafiki (known as Masoud at the time) was another world away in a Lebanon dog shelter. He had been rescued by an animal activist from his previous living situation, but his future was uncertain. With rescues for illegally smuggled baboons filled to the brim, it seemed Rafiki would be trapped in a small cage for the rest of his life.
When Julia heard his story, she immediately approached our board of directors.
"I couldn't just look away. Seeing his face, his eyes so empty of life - it broke my heart. I immediately met with our Board of Directors, and they worked to gather the funds I needed to fly across the world to save him."
It took a village to bring him back to the U.S., but we are proud to say Rafiki is safe, happy, and well in the United States. He has settled into his new habitat quite nicely and enjoys days filled with engaging activities and lots of bananas.
We hope you've enjoyed following us as much as we've enjoyed sharing our story of hope, love, and acceptance. We look forward to what the future brings. Happy tails from all of us at Second Chance Rescue until we meet again!
